Marla, Kanal, Square Feet, Gaz — enter the size you have, and every other size appears instantly below. All three Marla standards used in Pakistan (272.25, 250 and 225 sq ft) are supported.

Convert

1 Kanal = 20 Marla

Common:

Which unit is this size in?

Choose your Marla size. One Marla is not the same everywhere in Pakistan — in government / revenue records it is 272.25 sq ft, in many housing societies it is 250 sq ft, and in some areas (especially around Karachi) it is 225 sq ft. Select the one used in your area, otherwise the calculation will be wrong.

Size from Length × Width

In feet

Enter the plot’s length and width in feet — the total size in Marla, Kanal and all other units appears instantly, and a shape of your plot is drawn to that size below. The Marla standard selected above also applies here.

Your plot shape — drawn to size

The shape is drawn in proportion to the length and width you enter. The width is the front (road) side, and the plot’s area and size in Marla / Kanal are written on the shape itself.

Important notes

The conversion itself is simple, but the Marla difference causes most of the confusion in Pakistan — keep these three points in mind.

There are three kinds of Marla

272.25 sq ft — the old government (revenue) Marla, used in Punjab and KPK records. 250 sq ft — many private housing societies sell their plots on this basis. 225 sq ft — used in some areas of Karachi and Sindh.

Always confirm first which Marla your plot uses — the total square feet is written on the registry / allotment letter, which settles it exactly.

Basic formulas

All conversions are based on Square Feet:

1 Kanal = 20 Marla 1 Sq Yard (Gaz) = 9 Sq Ft 1 Sq Meter = 10.764 Sq Ft 1 Acre = 8 Kanal = 43,560 Sq Ft

Gaz and Square Yard are the same thing

In Pakistan, “Gaz” means a Square Yard — a 3 ft × 3 ft area. So 5 Marla (272.25 standard) = 1,361.25 sq ft = 151.25 Gaz. The linear yard used for measuring length is different; plot sizes always use square gaz.

Frequently asked questions

How many Marla and Sq Ft are in 1 Kanal?

1 Kanal = 20 Marla. In square feet it depends on the Marla standard: with the 272.25 Marla, 1 Kanal = 5,445 sq ft; with the 250 Marla, 5,000 sq ft; and with the 225 Marla, 4,500 sq ft.

How many Sq Ft is a 5 Marla plot?

On the standard (272.25) basis, 5 Marla = 1,361.25 sq ft. On the society (250) basis, 5 Marla = 1,250 sq ft — this is the famous 25 × 50 ft plot. On the 225 basis, 5 Marla = 1,125 sq ft (25 × 45 ft).

My plot is 35 × 65 ft — how many Marla is that?

35 × 65 = 2,275 sq ft. With the 272.25 Marla that works out to about 8.36 Marla, and with the 250 basis it is 9.1 Marla. Use the “Length × Width” section above to see the exact figure for your standard — the plot shape there is also drawn to those dimensions.

Why is the Marla size different in every city?

The Marla comes from the old revenue system (1 Marla = 9 Sarsai, which works out to 272.25 sq ft). Later, housing societies started designing plots on easier per-Marla sizes (250 or 225 sq ft) so that straight dimensions like 25 × 50 ft come out round. That is why, before buying any plot, you should always confirm the total Sq Ft — the word “Marla” alone is not enough.

This converter is for estimation and planning only. For legal records (registry, fard, allotment), always treat the total Square Feet written on the documents as final.
